Ascending and Descending the Sacred Mountain: Mystical Experience, Spiritual Emergencies, and the Integration of Psychedelic Experiences
General Description:
This four-class series delves into the most transformative and complex psychedelic experiences: mystical states or "peak consciousness." We will explore the complete journey, from preparation and the experience itself to the integration of its revelations.
We will begin with the sacred roots, studying the ritual wisdom of the Mazatec culture, which bequeathed to us the ceremonial use of mushrooms. We will appreciate how their myths, symbols, and practices create a safe container to channel the visionary experience towards individual and community healing.
Next, we will address the phenomenon of the mystical experience from the perspectives of science, psychology, and philosophy, examining its profound benefits for mental health, as well as its potential risks. Without the proper frameworks, setting, and support, an experience of this intensity can lead to what Stanislav Grof termed a Spiritual Emergency.
Finally, we will equip ourselves with practical tools for a harmonious "descent" from these summits of consciousness. We will present integration methodologies, both individual and group-based, that allow for translating the treasures of the experience into daily life. Techniques from phenomenological and constructivist psychology will be included, as well as the application of dream work methods, such as Montague Ullman's powerful Projective Dream Interpretation tool, adapted for the community integration of psychedelic experiences.
